‘Empire Records’ Scheduled to Make Broadway Debut in 2020
I'm having mixed emotions about this news at the moment.
Word came out this weekend that there are plans to turn the 1995 cult classic film 'Empire Records' into a full on Broadway musical. The movie wasn't a big box office success when it came out but I'll tell you what, myself and every single one of my friends could not only piratically quote the movie from beginning to end but could belt out every song on the soundtrack.
Even though at the time the movie wasn't concidered a huge success Empire Records starred a motley crew of actors that were a staple for teen films in the 90's and early 2000's some of which would go on to be some major players in Hollywood like Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger, Ethan Embry, Rory Cochrane, and Robin Tunney.
Now seeing as though that this film is one of my all time favorite flicks naturally I'm a little hesitant on deciding how I feel about the Broadway revival. On one hand it is going to be hard for me to watch this one without the original cast and there's always that fear, that you know, they are going to ruin it. Then I read that the Original writer Carol Heikkinen will be a part of the adaption process and that put me a little more at ease. On the other hand I am super excited to see if they will be able to do it justice and watch the movie come to life live on stage.
Either way, there's no way I could not go see it. Looks like we are going to have to wait a couple years to do that though because according to Deadspin the plan is for the new musical adaptation to hit Broadway in 2020 to to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the movies release.
What do you think will you be getting tickets when they go on sale?
