Well, we're officially living in the future.

The folks at Delphi Automotive PLC have been working hard over the past years to get their self-driving car ready for the masses.

And if all goes according to plan over the next week and a half, they will be one step closer to that goal.

On Sunday, Delphi Automotive's self-driving Audi SUV left San Francisco, bound for New York.

The trip of 3,500 miles is expected to take 10 days, Delphi Automotive told ABC News.

There will be an engineer behind the wheel the entire time, but the brains of the car will be doing the driving. The engineer will be there to take over just in case something goes cuckoo.

That's going to be one boring ride for that poor guy!
