Anxious Momma Watches As Her Ducklings Are Rescued In Hudson Valley

If you are a parent you will immediately understand the anxiety and worry this duck must have been feeling. It appears that momma duck was guiding her little hens on a walk in the Hudson Valley when all of a sudden the little ones fell into a storm drain.

Much like a Disney movie, although there is some peril, this story does have a good ending and we have the pictures to prove it. This is what happened to the Dutchess County duck and her little ones.

On Tuesday April 28th, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Environmental Conservation Officer Radomski responded to a call from a concerned resident reporting a Hen Mallard in distress near a storm drain in the Town of Beekman, NY.

Officer Radomski arrived at the location and observed 11 ducklings trapped in the storm drain as the hen Mallard paced back and forth nearby. ECO Radomski, with assistance from the Town of Beekman Highway Department, lifted the grating to the drain, safely netted the ducklings, and returned them to their mother.

How long were these little ones down in the storm drain? We may never know but we can confirm the momma and all 11 ducklings are happy, healthy and off on their way to their next adventure.

Just last week, driving along a Capital Region backroad, I was brought to a stop by a momma turkey and her poults. There must have been 8 or 9 of them crossing the road, no pops in sight. This was a nice reminder to slow down and notice the life that is going on all around us.
