The video gaming industry has come along way since I started playing Atari in the 1970's. Remember games such as Asteroids, Space Invaders and Centipede? Today the global gaming industry generates approximately $200 billion each year.

On Thursday January 5th it was announced that the gaming industry is coming to the Capital Region. An International video game developer, Rocket Science, will call Glenville, New York their new home.

The Daily Gazette reports that the Rocket Science Corporation will be taking over the old Glenville firehouse on Saratoga Road and turning the 8,200-square-foot facility into a multi-purpose building featuring the Capital District Gaming Studio. The Capital Region could become the birthplace of the next Minecraft or Grand Theft Auto.

We are happy to support the growth of the video game development industry in New York State. Rocket Science Corporation and the Capital District Gaming Studio will help create jobs, revitalize an underused and highly-visible property along a main thoroughfare, and spur new investments in a dynamic and growing industry. - ESD President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight.

According to News10, the Rocket Science facility will provide opportunities for anyone from a student to a pro to learn game development skills. You could earn professional certifications as well through programs connected to SUNY Schenectady and the University at Albany.

If all goes as planned the Rocket Science Corporation will have moved into the old firehouse building before the end of 2023 and continue to design and build the online features behind today’s most successful games.
