The Buffalo Bills are in Indianapolis for the last day of the 2024 scouting combine. The offensive lineman are taking center stage on Sunday and the Bills could take one at some point.

However, after today, the upcoming draft talk will take a brief backseat to the start of free agency.

The legal tampering period begins next Monday (March 11th), with free agency starting on March 14th. The Bills likely won’t have much to do when free agency opens, because they won’t have much money to spend.

Before the new league year begins on March 14th, the Bills have to get below the salary cap limit of 255.4 million. Currently, they’re about $41 million over and that means work will need to be done the next week to save some money. The first domino dropped on Sunday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bills plan to release running back and return specialist, Nyheim Hines.

The move will save $4.6 million against the cap. It’s a move that had to be made with the savings and low dead cap money.

Hines was acquired by trade from the Colts in November of 2022. He made one of the most memorable plays in Bills history, returning the opening kickoff against New England in week 18 of 2022 for a touchdown. It was the first play after what happened with Damar Hamlin in Cincinnati. The crowd at Highmark Stadium erupted. He returned another for a touchdown in the third quarter. It won the Bills that game.

Hines missed all of 2023 with a torn ACL, after he was struck in the leg by a jet ski. It was a freak accident that cost him the season.

Hines is a tremendous person and someone the Bills needed at the time on the field. This isn’t ideal but a move that had to be made.
