A Loudonville man faces up to 25 years in state prison after being convicted of terrorizing his estranged family during a frightening early-morning incident in 2024.

Broke Into Wife's Home

News 10 ABC is reporting that Thomas Sorensen, 46, broke into his wife’s home just after 6 a.m. on June 22nd, 2024, only a few days after she had obtained a stay-away order against him.

Prosecutors said he began screaming inside the home, waking family members and escalating an already volatile situation.

Colonie Police Find Him Walking with a Machete

Authorities say that when one victim attempted to call police, Sorensen wrestled the phone away. As the family tried to flee, he allegedly grabbed a machete from the garage and chased after them.

Officers with the Colonie Police Department located Sorensen walking along Loudon Road armed with a machete. Police ordered him to drop the weapon, deployed a Taser, and took him into custody without further injuries reported.

Some great work by the Colonie PD prevented any further damage, because according to reports, Sorensen wanted police to end his life.

"Suicide By Cop"

News 10 ABC says that during the four-day jury trial, Sorensen testified that he intended to see his family one last time before dying by “suicide by cop,” according to prosecutors.

A jury found him guilty of multiple charges, including first-degree burglary, criminal contempt, criminal possession of a weapon, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He remains in custody at the Albany County Correctional Facility and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 5.

For the family involved, the verdict brings a measure of justice after prosecutors described the incident as a terrifying ordeal.
