Macy's to close more than a dozen location nationwide, including 1 in Upstate New York. Are we witnessing the end of the major retail giant or is this part of the company's overall plan?

One year ago, almost to the date, Macy's announced a list of 66 "non-go-forward" store locations. That list included 9 New York locations with the big picture plan to close approximately 150 locations, keeping 350 up and running. Today a few more are added to the list.

For a store that opened it's doors in 1858, it is remarkable that they have any locations remaining 168 years later. Today Macy's will continue their "Bold New Chapter" plan which will see the brand reinvesting in stronger locations and digital capabilities, so the total number of stores is changing, with a shift away from underperforming locations.

According to Yahoo! Finance, Macy's will be closing more than a dozen locations in 12 states, including the Empire State.

The Macy's official website lists 30 New York State locations, which is 3rd behind California and Florida. Soon it appears the New York number will drop to 29. This Upstate location has been identified as the the one targeted to close.

  • Amherst, New York located at 730 Alberta, Drive (Boulevard Mall)
  • This location and the other dozen or so are expected to be fully closed by the first week of April, 2026.

The Capital Region of New York is one of the few areas in the state with more than one location to choose from. Crossgates Mall and Colonie Center Mall each have a Macy's and the 2 shopping centers are only about 6 miles apart.
