A new aquarium has opened in the Capital Region.

According to WNYT News Channel 13, the VIA Aquarium in Rotterdam, NY is now open featuring 37 exhibits and 500 species of fish. Biologist David Gross is in charge of the aquarium which contains 75 thousand gallons of water.  Admission on weekends is $19 for adults and and $10 for kids under 18. Gross said, "unless you travel to Boston or Niagra Falls, or down to Coney Island, there aren't any aquariums in the area." The aquarium is part of the revitalization process of the Rotterdam mall by Turkish company Via Port, who are trying to bring shoppers back into struggling malls. I personally hope this aquarium is a huge success for the Capital Region. I think it's a great idea. I've seen far too many malls close over the years. I just wish Via Port could have done this to help out some of my favorite malls growing up in the Hudson Valley area like the the old Dutchess Mall in Fishkill, NY.
