Why Are Egg Prices So High In New York Right Now?
If you're buying eggs each week during your trips to the grocery store you've noticed a large increase in price the last few weeks.
The current price of eggs is skyrocketing around New York right now. Just when we thought there might be a little relief it appears that is not in the forecast for a while. So why are the prices so high right now?
It appears that the cause of the rise in prices in eggs is due to bird flu. Yes, that it correct. The avian flu has made a come back and it's raising the price of eggs, but surprisingly not raising the price of chicken or other poultry, according to US Foods. In December they reported no change for the price of chicken.
This week, analysts reported that pricing on all sizes of tenders, breasts and wings remained unchanged from last week. Analysts expect pricing to be flat for jumbo wings, jumbo breasts and tenders through December.
Now that we're into January things have changed for eggs, or at least I've noticed a major increase the last couple of weeks. I've been paying $5.99. a dozen and the average appears to be around $5.57 according to People.
Farmers are still battling the bird flu outbreak that started back in January of 2022 and it's still driving up prices in 2025.
Is there any hope for the prices to drop?
Many people hoped that President-elect Donald Trump would bring down the prices of groceries, which right now seems very uncertain. In a recent interview, Trump said:
Look, they got them up. I'd like to bring them down. It's hard to bring things down once they're up. You know, it's very hard.
Right now the only way we're going to see those egg prices come down would be if there is a better federal response to the avian flu outbreak. The Biden administration has not executed this well, and if the next administration doesn't get a handle on it the prices could go even higher.
