New York Senate Passes Tougher Penalties For Drunk Drivers
New York's Senate passed a new measure that would toughen the penalties for those who are convicted of multiple drunk driving charges. What are they and will they work though?
If a person is convicted of three or more DWIs in a 15 year period they will be charged with a Class D felony, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and fined upwards of $10,000.
This particular bill, called Vince's Law, was named after 82-year-old Vincent Russo who was killed in 2010 by a driver who had five prior DWI-related convictions.
Is it enough though? Late last month a man was arrested with an alleged .25 BAC level going 110 MPH on I-87 and had over 20 driving suspensions and restrictions from his previous DWI convictions, yet he was still on the road.
