On September 25th New York State Police issued a press release regarding a case of larceny in the town of Cortlandt, New York. Troopers are trying to identify the individual pictured below and are asking for your help. The incident occurred at the ShopRite located in the Cortlandt Town Center plaza on East Main Street.

The FBI defines larceny as "theft of personal property". This could include stealing a bicycle, theft of tools, theft of a smartphone and shoplifting. Basically stealing any property or item that is not taken by force, violence or fraud is considered larceny.

According to Find Law, eating products in the store before paying is not necessarily shoplifting, as long as you pay for the item before leaving the store. There is a term called "shopkeeper's privilege" giving the individual store the right to detain an individual suspected of shoplifting. Generally speaking it is legal in New York to eat grocery items before paying for them.
