As a massive brush fire is burning on Long Island other parts of New York are being warned about fire danger in other parts of New York.

Dry and windy conditions seem all too familiar to us in Upstate New York. It seems that each year we're seeing more risk of wildfires around the state, and right now parts of Upstate New York, including the Capital Region, are a low risk of fire danger.

In the fall we saw fires burning through parts of the Catskills and the thing that is most in common for both that part of the year and this part of the year are winds. Those winds can spread the fire so fast it can be hard for crews to contain them. That's what happened in California that saw so many devastated earlier this year.

The NYS DEC has provided a guide to show us how high our risk is right now for fires and parts of the Hudson Valley and Capital Region remain in the "low" category. The same goes for New York City and Long Island.

There is an elevated wildfire risk in several areas due to dry, windy conditions. Gusts up to 30-40 mph are likely, generally blowing east & northeast.

The massive brush fire that started on Saturday afternoon on Long Island burned through 400 acres and as of Sunday was 80% contained, according to NBC News. However there is still risk of it spreading as windy conditions continue around that part of the state.
