Food & Wine has announced the best cheesemakers in the United States and four in Upstate New York have made the list. In the article, they were listed alphabetically according to the type of cheese. To have four cheesemakers on the list from Upstate New York is quite the honor.
Chaseholm Farm in Pine Planes, Dutchess County in Hudson Valley of New York
The Chase family owns Chaseholm Farm and they are a third-generation farm with its own herd. They have a variety of cheeses that are fresh, spreadable dill farmer's cheese, and firm alpine-style cheese. They are made from the farm's own herd and milk from their own cows. Food & Wine praised their American triple cream soft cheese.
Old Chatham Sheepherding Co. Groton, NY in Central New York, Tompkins County
The farm is owned by Dr. Dave Galton who is a professor at Cornell University and he bought it back in 2014. He had already been selling sheep's milk to the old owners for years. They have many kinds of cheese from fresh cranberry goat cheese to blue cheese and a three-milk gouda. Food & Wine says that the cheeses are "worth seeking out".
Nettle Meadow Farm & Cheese Company Thurman, NY in Warren County-Adirondacks
This thirty-two-year-old farm is set in the Adirondacks just west of Lake George. They are not only a cheesemaking farm but an animal sanctuary. They house horses, donkeys, ducks, chickens, pigs, llamas, bunnies, cats, and turkeys and when the goats retire they also live on the farm.
Nettle Meadow has a wide variety of cheeses and is recognized by Food & Wine. They have a cow's milk cheese made with Irish whiskey and a semi-aged cheese with mild from cows, sheep, and goats they call Three Sisters.
Four Fat Fowl Stephentown, NY in Rensselaer County in the Hudson Valley
"Maniacal cheese lovers" created this business in 2013. It sits in an old school building near the Massachusetts border according to nyupstate.com. They offer three different kinds of cheese. They have a soft Camermebery, ricotta, and triple cream cheese in a mini wheel. The triple cheese they call St. Stephen was crowned one of the best in Food & Wine's list.
