Finally, you can get IG-11 to help you mail a letter.

That’s because the United States Postal Service is teaming up with Lucasfilm for a new series of Star Wars stamps dedicated to the franchise’s most robotic series of characters, the droids. There are 10 droids listed as part of the set, which will be available in books of 20: IG-11, R2-D2, K-2SO, D-O, L3-37, BB-8, C-3PO, a Gonk droid, 2-1B surgical droid, and Chopper.

Dude, how did the Gonk droid sneak in there? Also: What the heck is a Gonk droid?

(Okay, I just looked it up. A Gonk droid is “little more than walking batteries and they “trundle along as directed by their owners or their programming, recharging vehicles and machinery. They get their name in imitation of their simple vocalizations.” The Gonks have appeared in five Star Wars movies including The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace, as well as Star Wars: Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Well, now you can Gonk up your mail to your heart’s content.)

These are not the first Star Wars stamps ever made. [Pushes up glasses, adjusts pocket protector] Back in 2007, the USPS commemorated the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars with a book of stamps featuring the Special Edition poster artwork painted by Drew Struzan. Those stamps now fetch a pretty penny on the collector’s market. These likely will eventually as well, because people can’t get enough of those darn Gonks.

You can get a better look at all the new stamps over at StarWars.com. Their post claims the choice of droids for these stamps is a nod to the company’s “commitment to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning.”
