You may want to avoid portions of the New York State Thruway this Saturday unless you want to sit in traffic and watch the Tappan Zee Bridge go BOOM.

Beginning at roughly 9:30am this Saturday, January 13th state contractors will start to bring down the Tappan Zee Bridge (or at least whats left of it) with explosives.

While it's kind of sad to see a New York staple get destroyed it still sounds like it's destruction might be cool to see go down. According to LoHud the plan is to detonate explosive charges that will essentially blow up the bridge and drop it into pieces into the river. The over the next several weeks marine salvage teams will recover the steel pieces using chains that have been strategically placed on the river bed and take them away with the help of a few barges.

While this certainly might be a sight to behold if you are planning on traveling through the area you might want to avoid a few spots or plan for some delays.

Traffic on the New York State Thruway across the new Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge will be stopped in South Nyack and Tarrytown while the old bridge is dropped into the river.

The river’s main navigation channel will close for three hours beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the New York State Thruway will close for 45 minutes between exit 9 in Westchester County and Exit 11 in Rockland County. Motorists are being encouraged to use alternate routes.
