The Nerdy Burden
Last night I saw "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" for my wife's birthday. As soon as we had left the theater, our friends began voicing their complaints and grievances regarding the movie.
I enjoyed the movie, because I had gone into it thinking, "Let the movie tell the story, don't tell the story to the movie."
I am not innocent of being a critic. In fact, I am a Real American Movie Critic. I have been disappointed by movie adaptations of comics, fantasy novels, anime and video games. The burden of having expectations for that genre is much like the burden of bearing the ring of power. They are precious to me, but unfortunately, are all together evil and must be returned to the very place in which they were created in order to destroy them. Before the forces of evil end our world.
It is The Nerdy Burden and the wounds that we endure will affect us for the rest of our nerdy lives. So I settle for letting the movie tell me the story, even if I know how the story should be told.
For the record, I loved "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and I highly recommend it.
But that is just my Nerdy Burden.
What's yours?
