New York Fishermen Caught Twice In Same Week! Jail Time?

Two New York fishermen set out to catch some fish and now they have been caught and could spend time in jail!

On Monday March 13th, according to New York State Environmental Conservation (DEC), Environmental Conservation Officers were out on patrol conducting fish compliance checks. Officers encountered two anglers in possession of steelhead less than the legal length of 25 inches.

This incident took place in Niagara County on Keg Creek. The Officers ticketed both fishermen for possessing fish less than the legal limit, explained the special regulations for Lake Ontario tributaries, and provided the anglers with a copy of the DEC freshwater fishing regulations guide. Simple enough, right? Not quite.

On Wednesday March 15th, officers were back out on fish compliance patrol when they encountered the same two fisherman, in approximately the same fishing area. Officers observed the individuals keep two steelhead in an area where the daily limit is a single fish.

Once the anglers packed up and headed back to their vehicle the officers approached the pair. In addition to being over the daily limit, the two steelhead were less than the legal length, AGAIN! Tickets were issued for possessing a fish over the daily limit and possession of fish less than the legal length. The violations can result in fines up to $250 and up to 15 days imprisonment per charge.
