Due to many different altitudes, conditions and ability levels, outdoor activity can pose several different challenges for those looking to go hiking, biking or swimming in New York State. If you aren't truly prepared these challenges could become life threatening.

Recently one hiker might not have been fully prepared to take on a trail in the Hudson Valley, especially in the heat and humidity we experienced last week. The conditions were so strong that this hiker went in and out of consciousness as New York State Forest Rangers responded.

On Friday June 21st, according to a New York State Department of Environmental (DEC) press release, Forest Rangers responded to a call regarding a going in and out of consciousness on Breakneck Ridge in Putnam County. These names come from somewhere.

The Hudson Highlands Park Manager collected the info and shared it with Forest Rangers. These Rangers along with staff from New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation hiked the trail and reached the subject at approximately 4pm.

The hiker is an downstate 18-year-old from Holbrook, NY. The stranded subject was given food, water and electrolytes and was helped down the mountain with the use of a wheeled litter.

Once all members of the party reached the parking area the subject was examined by medical professionals and transported to a hospital for further assistance. The entire ordeal was over by 5:30pm.
