Happy Birthday today (Aug. 16) to Golden Earring lead vocalist Barry Hay. He's 70.
Dutch band Golden Earring formed in 1961 as the Golden Earrings (eventually dropping the "s" in 1969. The band achieved worldwide success with the hits "Radar Love" in 1973 and "Twilight Zone" in 1982.
The single "Radar Love" came off of the album Moontan which was certified Gold. The band embarked on their first U.S. tour in 1969-1970 playing alongside the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Eric Clapton. In all, Golden Earring completed 13 U.S. tours from 1969-1984. The band performed as opening acts for bands like Santana, King Crimson, The Doobie Brothers, Rush, and 38 Special during this period. With the popularity of "Radar Love" from 1973-1974, they had Kiss and Aerosmith as their opening act. The song "Twilight Zone" and it's video (one of the first rock videos to air on the recently launched MTV) gave Golden Earring a top 10 hit in 1982.
