Tragic End for Missing Hiker at This Popular Upstate New York Destination
Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz, New York is a place where people go to get away from their troubles and, depending on weather, enjoy a day hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping and more. You can even climb on the world-famous Gunks cliffs. Sometimes, if you aren't careful, a day of fun could turn to tragedy.
On March 14th, according to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), a 45-year-old from Brooklyn set out for an adventure at Mohonk Preserve but never made it home.

Saturday March 11 - A 45-year-old man from Brooklyn reportedly left his home and headed to the Mohonk Preserve. Prior to setting out on a hike in the Bonticou Crag area, the Brooklyn man had a phone conversation with his daughter.
Monday March 13 - The hiker did not report to work.
Tuesday March 14 - New York State Police Troop F located the vehicle of the missing 45-year-old from Brooklyn in the Spring Farm parking lot of Mohonk Preserve.
Once New York State Police located the individuals vehicle, the search for the hiker intensified. For 3 straight days, New York State Police were joined by 10 Forest Rangers, Mohonk Preserve Patrol Rangers, Sam's Point Search and Rescue, and Marbletown Rescue in the search.
If you have ever been to Mohonk Preserve you understand how difficult a search like this could be with the steep, rocky, technical terrain, and the remnants of a recent snowstorm.
On Friday March 17th, at approximately 10am, searchers located the hiker's backpack and cell phone at the base of a 50-foot cliff. Just over 6 hours later, searchers found the subject deceased, approximately 400 feet away from the presumed fall site.
Our condolences to family and friends. Please be careful as you hit the trails of New York State.
