State and local police departments have conducted a number of underage drinking stings around the area since the beginning of the year. Troopers in Rensselaer checked over a dozen establishments that serve alcohol, including restaurants, liquor stores, gas stations and beverage centers.

In each case, a plain clothes officer is present when one or more underage operatives enter the business and attempt to purchase alcohol. The operatives are not 21 and are not permitted to lie about their age if asked or provide any kind of false identification. Therefore, placing all liability on the establishment to check and confirm the age of the patron.

Out of the 18 places checked, four of them were cited for selling alcohol to a minor. They are:

Police charged four people, one from each establishment, with unlawful dealing with a minor - a misdemeanor - after selling alcohol to a person under 21 years of age.

Twelve other establishments in Rensselaer County were also checked by police, with no problems.
