When you think of all the businesses and offices that have been closed since mid-March the Department of Motor Vehicles might not be one of the first that comes to mind....until you need to renew your driver's license, get a new car registered or take your CDL exam. Then suddenly you realize, you can't because they are closed because of the pandemic.

The New York State DMV has announced that its Albany office as well as offices in Onondaga County, Nassau County, Suffolk County, Rockland County, Westchester County, and the five boroughs of New York City will begin processing registrations and other transactions by mail starting Monday, June 1. Currently, The Department of Motor Vehicles won't open for in-person transactions until we enter Phase Three of the reopening plan outlined by Governor Cuomo.

You will also be able to do in-office dropbox transactions starting on June 4. Call your local DMV for instructions and information on what transactions can be handled.

“As New York State begins to reopen, the DMV has and will continue to adapt the way it does business to ensure public health and safety are protected,” says DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “As regions advance to phase three of reopening, we will expand customer service options, like offering limited in-person transactions by reservation only. These new policies will allow us to meet the needs of our customers while keeping everyone safe.”  www.news10.com

If you've been waiting to take your CDL, you're in luck, because testing will resume in all counties that are in phase one or higher. Examiners will wear PPE and customers must wear masks and take a health screening before the exam.
