Here Are The Best Places To Spot Moose In New York

Earlier this week everyone was talking about the moose spotted trotting along a busy road in Queensbury, New York. You can watch the video HERE. This has me thinking, where are the best places to see moose in the Empire State?

Obviously a random road in the northern tier of the Capital Region is not a common place to spot moose. So, to increase our chances of seeing moose, without bothering them, where in New York would we have to go?

According to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), relatively speaking, we don't have that many moose in New York. For example, Alaska has an estimated 175,000 moose, Maine has approximately 60,000, and New York has less than 1,000.

Most New York moose are located in the northeastern part of the state in the Adirondack Mountains and the Taconic Highlands along the Massachusetts and Vermont borders.

According to Adirondack.com, some of the best places for moose watching in New York include:

• Vermontville, NY, along Route 3, from Saranac Lake to Plattsburgh
• Meacham Lake, along Route 30
• Saranac Lake
• Limekiln Lake on Cedar River Road, part of the Moose River Plains

Here are some cool moose facts I'll bet you didn't know:

• The moose is the largest member of the deer family
• Bulls weigh from 600 to 1,200 pounds and stand up to 6 feet tall at the shoulder
• The black bear is the enemy to moose calves less than nine weeks old but there are no predators of adult moose in New York State.
• Vehicle collisions are a significant mortality factor for moose.
