Albany, New York Was Below Freezing For Over 212 Straight Hours
Freezing temperatures were felt around the Capital Region and it looks like we have to brace for more.
To say it's been cold around Upstate New York would be an understatement. For a few weeks we had seen some really low temperatures, many places waking up to below zero for several days.
Those freezing temperatures were felt in Albany as the airport posted their first sub zero temperatures in over a year in December.
The weather has had us see snow, ice, and freezing rain and all around Christmas. Now it appears for the first time in over 200 hours we went above freezing in Albany.
Paul Caiano from WNYT posted that on Saturday Albany went above freezing for the first time in 212 hours. That's almost 9 days of below freezing. Pretty amazing when you think about it. That was the longest stretch of below freezing weather since January 2022 (296 hours) and the longest stretch since December 2013 (217 hours).
We finally went above freezing on Saturday around 2pm and it looks like we stayed there after all that freezing rain left behind a nice coating of ice. The next few days look like they'll be pretty warm for us, reaching into the 50s before we head into the New Year.
Right now it looks like 2025 is going to start cold.
After a thaw this week, computer models are forecasting us to go into another deep freeze starting next weekend and continuing through at least mid-January. This is trending more like an old-school winter in the Capital Region with a below normal December almost guaranteed and frigid air headed in for the coldest time of the year climatologically.
So don't get used to the warmth in other words. Things are going to be pretty frozen for us for a long while according to that report from Paul. Stay warm, Capital Region.
