Two New York Hikers Hid In A Hunter’s Camp After A Bear Chased Them

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) searched for a teenager with autism after it was reported that the youth had run away from home in the town of Belfast, NY.

On Sunday July 5th, at approximately 1pm, Forest Rangers, the Allegany County Search Team, local fire departments, and New York State Police responded to the missing persons call and began to search for the vulnerable youth. As time ticked away and family members grew more and more concerned, these pros jumped into action.

The first clue the rescue team found was a shirt that belonged to the teenager. They spotted the shirt in a ravine approximately one mile from the youth's residence. At 4:15pm, Ranger Skudlarek located the subject in the ravine approximately half a mile from the residence. EMS evaluated the teen and reunited them with their family.

This was not the only case of teens in trouble this past week, according to a press release. On the same day in Washington County Rangers responded to a call for two hikers who climbed the summit of Buck Mountain and then encountered a bear.

The two 17-year-olds ran away and found a hunter’s camp and sheltered in the mud room. Rangers located the hikers and escorted them out of the woods. If you encounter black bear, DEC Officials suggest you never run or scream. Stand your ground, speak calmly in a low voice, and back away slowly. Make yourself look large, use loud noises.
