The number of Upstate New York counties receiving the "high" COVID community level designation continues to grow.

Two weeks ago it was 10 counties. Last week it was 23. And now the number of Upstate New York counties where the CDC says there are high community levels of COVID is 35, including 6 in the Capital Region.

The CDC created this monitoring system to measure community levels of COVID to determine recommended precautionary measures that the public should take. At all three levels (;ow, medium, and high), the CDC recommends getting vaccinated and testing for those who have symptoms. In counties with a medium designation, the CDC recommends that at-risk individuals wear a mask indoors. If a county is given a high designation the CDC recommends all residents mask up when in public indoor spaces.

Upstate New York has definitely seen an uptick in COVID cases as the new BA variants continue to spread - here is the full list of counties that currently have a "high" community-level designation.

The CDC Says You Should Mask Up In These 35 New York Counties

The CDC has designated these 35 Upstate New York counties as currently "high-risk" for COVID as of May 3, 2022, and is recommending residents wear masks because of that designation. The designation is based on the number of hospital admissions per 100,000 residents in a 7 day period. 6 Capital Region counties are on this list, consisting of counties from Upstate, Central, and Western New York.
