Two men and a young boy went ice fishing and only one of these individuals made it home alive.

On the evening of Sunday January 18th, New York State Police responded to an initial call, in the town of Clifton, NY, regarding a snowmobile that had gone through the ice. Soon after arriving on location officers were no longer searching for a snowmobile, but they were looking for 2 men and a 6-year-old boy. Every second was crucial to their survival.

While searching along the shoreline of the river, LaPlante located one of the fishermen, who had fallen through the ice. LaPlante crawled toward him to assist, but subsequently fell through the ice himself. LaPlante was able to remove himself from the water, but he was unable to locate the two remaining individuals.

LaPlante reported the incident and returned to his residence to warm up. Fortunately the 6-year-old boy made his way back to the residence, having walked there from the scene. Both were transported to Clifton-Fine Hospital for treatment of hypothermia. Now the relative and the 6-year-old boy were being treated but 2 men still remained in danger.

Law enforcement, fire, and rescue personnel responded to the scene. Rescue crews later located both men, unresponsive in the water. Rescue crews removed them from the water and transported them to the hospital with CPR in progress. Bryan P. LaPlante and Michael J. Booth were later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
