Tragic snowmobile accident in Herkimer County, New York claims the life of a teenage boy.

According to the National Institutes of Health, each year snowmobile accidents produce approximately 200 deaths and 14,000 injuries. Excess speed, alcohol, driver inexperience, and poor judgment are the leading causes of accidents. Here's what we know about this specific accident.

Based on information taken from a press release, on Monday February 2, 2026, at approximately 7pm, New York State Police responded to a report of a snowmobile crash near of Riggerman Road in the town of Russia, NY.

The initial investigation showed that a single snowmobile with one operator was traveling southbound on a secondary trail near Riggerman Road. Somewhere along this trail the operator lost control. The snowmobile veered off the trail and struck a tree.

New York State Troopers indicate that this investigation is still ongoing. Sadly, what we do know is, a 16-year-old boy suffered fatal injuries as a result of this crash. The young man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

New York State offers a single training course for all snowmobile operators ages 10 and older. The course provides basic knowledge that all snowmobile operators should have to ensure their safety, the safety of other riders, and the safety of additional trail users. Find a course near you HERE.

Here are some snowmobile safety tips;

  • Wear a helmet, and appropriate clothing.
  • Inspect your machine’s lights, brakes, and throttle before riding.
  • Follow trail rules, such as , ride single file, obey all posted signage.
  • Frozen Water Warning: Avoid riding on lakes and rivers, as these are not officially designated trails.
  • Operators aged 10 to 17 must possess a safety certificate when riding in New York.
