A 3-year-old suddenly went missing one afternoon, only to be found a couple of hours later in a field about a mile-and-a-half from home.

According to the Hudson Valley Post, nearly 2,600 children went missing in New York State in 2025. The good news is 2,450 of those cases were resolved. One key to success is reporting the missing persons disappearance quickly. You do not have to wait 24-hours as some people believe.

This 3-year-old was last seen on County Route 22 an hour earlier, so the report came in quickly. New York State Police and the Allegany County Drone Team were on scene.

The missing child’s mother said the child was playing outside with the family dog and then she couldn’t see them anymore. Family immediately began searching the area. Ranger Christopher worked with NYSP to search nearby roads and fire departments to check ponds and structures on adjacent properties.

At 9pm, nearly 2 hours later, a neighbor driving on Hawks Road found the child and dog in a field on the edge of the road, 1.4 miles away from the house. The Independence Emergency Squad evaluated the child and returned them to their family. Scary situation but a happy ending.
