This one hits close to home for a lot of us who grew up in Mechanicville. The old school at 10 North Main Street, the one with that unforgettable gym, is getting a second life, and it’s not just another renovation.

A local developer, Mike Davidson, who remembers the packed basketball games just like I do, has big plans to bring it back to the center of the community.

According to the Albany Business Review, the project would turn the former school into a mix of apartments, city offices, and businesses, plus a theater and space for events like basketball tournaments.

Best part? The gym is staying the same. The one where so many of us spent Friday nights cheering on and playing in. It’s already used for local sports leagues and even circus training a few times a year.

Built back in 1914, the building has sat mostly empty for over two decades. Now, Davidson and his team are looking to breathe new life into it with about 90 apartments, restaurants, and a fully updated (and all-electric) system powered by geothermal energy. There’s even talk of using historic tax credits and clean-energy financing to help make it happen.

It’s nice to see something from our past being cared for, not torn down. That old gym holds a lot of amazing memories, and soon, it’ll make new ones for a whole new generation in Mechanicville.
