Watch: NYS DEC Shows Just How Hard It Is to Hit This Upstate Bridge
Why Drivers Keep Hitting The Bridge Is Beyond Me
If you've ever watched a truck peel open like a sardine can after hitting a low bridge, you've probably asked yourself the same question: How did they not see all the warning signs?
The New York State Department of Transportation (not DEC!) recently shared a fast-paced, entertaining, and surprisingly informative video that uses the infamous Glenville bridge—better known as "The Can Opener"—to show drivers exactly what's in place to prevent a bridge strike.

Bridge Strikes ARE Preventable!
The message is simple: Bridge strikes are 100% preventable.
The video walks viewers through every warning a driver receives before reaching the bridge. It starts with a clearance sign one mile before the bridge, followed by another a half-mile away.

As drivers get closer, there are additional low-clearance warnings, the bridge height is posted multiple times, and there's even a designated truck turnaround area where over-height vehicles can safely pull over and avoid disaster.

In other words, drivers are given every opportunity to avoid becoming the next viral bridge strike.
Whether you're behind the wheel of a commercial truck, moving van, RV, or any other tall vehicle, officials say it only takes a few seconds to know your vehicle's height and pay attention to the posted clearances.
It's a clever reminder that while the Glenville bridge has earned its "Can Opener" reputation, it doesn't have to claim its next victim.
