Metallica is one of the most influential rock and metal bands of all time. That is certainly not up for debate. Their influence can still be felt in newer music, and likely will for a very long time. While they cut their teeth on thrash metal in the 1980s, they exploded to major fame with the heavy sound on 1991's Black Album. That sound was just the beginning for Metallica's departure from the thrash sound that fans were accustomed to. In 1996 they released an album that to this day is incredibly divisive amongst fans.

June 4, 1996 -  Metallica release 'Load'

For many Metallica fans it's a day that you either loved or hated. At the time, I think the tried and true thrash fans hated them for changing their sound to more hard rock mainstream. Many called them "sellouts" for cutting their hair.

Now, in 2026 we are 30 years removed from the release of this album I feel that it is time to learn to appreciate it. Many fans do, especially the ones like me who grew up in 90s and heard this Metallica far more often than their previous works. The songs were huge hits and the music videos were full of dark imagery and all over MTV at the time. I can tell you that 1996's 'Load' and their follow up, 'Reload', were big reasons why I became a Metallica fan.

I know that those first four albums from Metallica are the holy grail for many, and I would agree. "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" are masterpieces of thrash metal. "...And Justice for All" is iconic for many reasons. I just think it's time, if you haven't done so, to give these 90s era Metallica albums a chance.

The singles off 'Load" are some of my favorites. "King Nothing", "Mama Said", "Bleeding Me." These are classic hard rock tracks from the 90s and no, they aren't thrash metal. They are, however, cemented in rock history. They still get air play. They are in constant rotation on my personal playlists.

The time for hate is over. It's time to really take a listen to these songs that James, Lars, and Kirk put their hearts into. In this world if we can't evolve we get left behind. In 2026 Metallica has been doing this for 45 years. They're still the top of the food chain, and probably will be until they decide they've had enough.
