New York State Police are warning the public about a phone scam involving the State Police. The premise is, you get a call from the New York State Police and, when you answer, the person on the other end asks for your personal information. The thing is, that person is not a New York State Trooper.
Typically what happens during these calls is the imposter will advise you that there is a case pending against you and that this imposter needs you personal information. The information requested could include your social security number, address, bank information, etc. DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM!
One reason this scam has had some success is that the caller ID shows New York State Police number 631-756-3300, which IS the accurate phone number.
According to Troop L of the New York State Police, neither the state police, nor any agency authorized by it, will ever solicit for money, or ask for personal information over the phone. To date this scam has been contained to Nassau and Suffolk Counties but could head Upstate at any time.
