New York State Police Warn Against Phone Scam! Did You Get This Call?
How many times each week would you say you receive a phone call from a number you don't recognize? For some, it happens every day and most of us just get annoyed and decline the call. What if one of those calls came from the New York State Police? If you see that on your caller ID you might be compelled to answer.
Consider the following information as a warning against a potential phone scam that has been happening in New York State. Here's what you need to know.
New York State Police are warning the public about a phone scam involving the State Police. The premise is, you get a call from the New York State Police and, when you answer, the person on the other end asks for your personal information. The thing is, that person is not a New York State Trooper.
Typically what happens during these calls is the imposter will advise you that there is a case pending against you and that this imposter needs you personal information. The information requested could include your social security number, address, bank information, etc. DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM!
One reason this scam has had some success is that the caller ID shows New York State Police number 631-756-3300, which IS the accurate phone number.
According to Troop L of the New York State Police, neither the state police, nor any agency authorized by it, will ever solicit for money, or ask for personal information over the phone. To date this scam has been contained to Nassau and Suffolk Counties but could head Upstate at any time.
