New York State School Cell Phone Ban – Parents Say It Should Be Their Call, Not The Governors
Many Capital Region parents are upset at the proposed blanket call phone bans for schools that Governor Hochul is looking at launching in fall 2025.
Bringing a cell phone to school is something that many of us didn't even have the option for when we were attending classes. When I was in college I didn't even have a cell phone as they weren't as easily gotten as they are now. Times have changed and now most kids have a cell phone, and some of them have them at an early age.
The worst things about phones now is that we're all glued to them. You're probably reading this on your phone right now. They can be a bit distracting, but many parents in the Capital Region are not happy with the Governor stepping in to try and ban them from schools across the state.
Experts and advocates agree: We need bell-to-bell restrictions on cell phones in schools to protect our kids and ensure distraction-free learning. - Gov Hochul Instagram
Many parents said that it should be their decision and should not be mandated by anyone, the school or state. Many of the comments we got via Facebook want to be sure they remain in control. A lot of that comes from wanting to keep their own children safe.
Until those who's making these decisions starts paying child support; I'm going with a hard HELL NOOOO I; as a responsible parent, has made sure my child isn't on her phone UNLESS it's because she's checking her bloodsugars or issues with her diabetes - TJ
No, parents make the call. What if one of those "active" situations comes up? - Harold
Others said that if the kids can't have phones teachers should also be limited on their phone activity is school.
Teachers need to be held to the same standards. No phones or electronics during the school day. Focus on teaching the curriculum. - Sarah
If the Governor's "bell to bell" plan goes into affect it wouldn't take place until the start of the next school year in September 2025.
