Currently there is a shortage of rock salt around the country, including New York State. It's left many without the ability to properly clean their sidewalks and walkways. Now the City of Albany is offering help.

One thing that we use a lot of in the Capital Region in the winter is rock salt. Unfortunately right now there doesn't appear to be enough to go around. Many streets and sidewalks in the area are still covered with ice from the weekend storm and it doesn't look like that's going to change given the freezing cold temperatures we're experiencing.

Why is there a shortage?

WTEN reports that the state is trying to move away from imported salt. That has limited to amount of salt that suppliers have, and that they don't have enough to help all areas of New York.

This salt shortage is affecting more than just the roads. It is also making it hard for homeowners to keep their driveways and sidewalks clear. Some places don't even have salt available for purchase.

The City of Albany is offering residents free salt in order to try and keep surfaces as safe as possible.

This event will be taking place February 19th and 20th at four different locations around the city.

  • Westland Hills (Anthony Street), off Colvin Avenue
  • Ridgefield Park (parking lot) off Patridge Street
  • Krank Park (parking lot)
  • Arbor Hill Softball Field (parking lot)

You will need to bring proof your a city of Albany resident and your own bucket or bag to put the salt in. It cannot exceed 5 gallons.
