Billions In Rent Relief Coming To New York June 1st
If you have been hit hard by the pandemic and are struggling to pay your rent there are 2.7 billion reasons to have hope. Beginning at 9am on Tuesday June 1st, New York state will be accepting applications to get your share of $2.7 billion in federal assistance.
If your household is approved you may receive up to 12 months of rental back pay, up to 3 months of additional rental assistance and up to 12 months of utility back payments. Here are some of the eligibility requirements according to the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.
- Household gross income is at or below 80% of the area median income.
- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a member of the household received unemployment benefits, a reduction in income or experienced financial hardship on or after March 13, 2020.
- If your rent fell overdue on or after March 13, 2020.
- The household must be at risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability, which can be demonstrated by having rental arrears owed on or after March 13, 2020.

Starting June 1st there will be a 30 day priority given to certain households. Here is a sample:
- Households with income at or below 50% the area median income that also include a household member who:
- Is currently unemployed for at least 90 days; or
- Is a veteran; or
- Has an eviction case related to their current residence pending in court; or
- Resides in a mobile home
- Households with income at or below 50% area median income.
- Households with income at or below 80% area median income that also include a household member who:
- Is currently unemployed for at least 90 days
- Households with income at or below 80% area median income
Click HERE for the complete priority list. After the first 30 days, applications for all eligible households will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, as long as funds remain available.
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) is designed to provide significant economic relief to help low and moderate-income households avoid homelessness or housing instability.
