Car Takes Out Several Utility Polls on Central Ave in Colonie

Power was knocked out to as many as 300 customers on Thursday morning when a car traveling west on Central Avenue went off the road and took out a number of utility poles.

It happened sometime before 4am. Not only utility poles, but streetlights, signs and trees were also taken out before the car finally came to a stop in front of Smokey Bones.

The accident also caused traffic backups for hours, causing southbound traffic on the Northway to bottleneck off of Exit 2W.

Police haven't said what the cause of the crash was, but did say the driver of the car suffered minor injuries. Witnesses say at least four utility poles were snapped in half.

Police and National Grid crews will be on the scene doing their best to re-direct traffic and get everything fixed as soon as possible. This is indeed going to take some time for crews to fix, so if this area of Central Ave is on your route to or from work today, it's probably best to take a different route.

Back on April 6, a similar accident occurred where a car took out a utility pole (only one) on Central Avenue in front of Best Fire. Central Ave is one of the busiest roads traveled in the Capital Region and anytime there's an accident, it REALLY backs things up.

We hope to have an update from Colonie Police later today on what the cause of the crash was and a possible estimated time for when power will be restored.
