I love to see our dog happy. A number of things such as dinner, car rides and swimming make our Mondo one excited Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Maybe one of his favorite things is going on a hike and giving his athletic 100 pound body a good workout. I never gave any thought to what happens if he gets injured. Do I carry him? What do i do?

A family here in New York had to face that decision when their dog, whose even bigger, got injured. To make it more complicated they were 2 miles from their car, in the woods at night!

Imagine you are hiking deep in the woods of New York with your 135-pound Bernese Mountain Dog and he gets injured. According to NYS DEC this happened one week ago in Hunter, NY.

The call came in to Greene County 911 around 9:30pm requesting assistance. The caller was on the Pecoy Notch Trail trying to find his friends and their dog. The sun was down and the skies were dark making it even more challenging to locate them let alone help the dog.

At 10:30pm, Hunter Police, Green County Sheriff's Office, and a New York State Police Trooper drove to the trailhead and located the vehicle. Then they entered the woods to search for the party.

The couple, their friend and the injured dog were found 2 miles  up the trail. Now how to get the dog out? Teamwork! The pooch was unable to walk so they used a camping hammock to create a stretcher and they carried him out! Even with help and experienced hikers, they didn't make it back to the vehicle until approximately 2AM.
