We are running out of digits in the 518!

So it looks like by the first quarter of 2019 we will be out of phone numbers to follow the 518 area code so one way or another a new area code has to be introduced in the Capital Region.

There are two options being thrown around right now. The first would be where no existing numbers would be effected but any any new number issued would receive a new area code. The second however, is the one that no one really seems to be a fan of. In the second scenario, as described by the TU, would have the geographic region split into two and the Albany and Troy areas would keep the 518 area code and the Schenectady and Sartoga areas would be issued a brand new area code.

I've been through this situation before and sometimes an area code is more than just an area code its part of who you are. It's where you are from. On May 8th there is even a big 518 Day celebration here in the Capital Region. Aside from your personal connection to the area code there is the business that would be effected as well. From marketing campaigns to even possible name changes.

Personally I think the first scenario would be my choice but is it the right choice in the long run? You can get the whole run down up to this point by clicking HERE.

What do you think? Would you be sad to loose the 518 area code?
