The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Gets Bigger and Better
The Albany Pine Bush Preserve has recently been expanded! An additional 15.1 acres will be added to the already sprawling 3,400-acre preserve across three municipalities. According to the Times Union, adding protected land increases the total acreage to nearly 120 acres and ensures that this precious resource will remain safe for generations.
The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is home to many species of rare plants and animals, making it one of the most important ecological sites in New York State. The preserve also serves as an important recreational destination for locals and visitors alike, providing a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life with its unique mix of habitats, including dunes, pine barrens, wetlands, and meadows.
The recently acquired parcel of land adds even more diversity to the landscape. Last February, the 41-acre donation from the Town of Colonie included woodlands with open fields and grasslands, which provide habitat for numerous species such as bobolinks, bluebirds, savannah sparrows, and eastern meadowlarks, northern harriers, short-eared owls, hawks, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks, and other raptors. These areas also provide vital pollinator habitats for honeybees and butterflies throughout the region.
The new 15-acre parcel is located in Colonie near Crossgates Mall and Wolf Road. Despite its proximity to commercial development, much of this new land remains undeveloped, which makes it all the more valuable as a nature preserve. It offers diverse habitats, from wetland marshes to upland forests, that can provide wildlife refuge while offering outdoor recreation opportunities such as hiking and bird watching.
We are fortunate enough to have over 120 connected acres of protected wilderness right here in our backyard—and now, with the addition of 15 more acres—there is even more opportunity for us all to enjoy its beauty! Whether you’re looking for a peaceful escape from city life or want to experience some stunning natural beauty up close and personal – visit The Albany Pine Bush Preserve today! You won’t be disappointed!
