The Hudson Valley of New York is one of the most rattlesnake-infested regions in the United States. Of all the things to have the most of we have to be at the top of the list with snakes? We couldn't have the most puppies, or the most chocolate? Come on man!

The Hudson Valley features thousands of miles of hiking trails, filled with rocky and mountainous places where snakes, specifically rattlesnakes, prefer to live. Just when you thought the most you'd have to think about while out and about is mosquitos, now you have to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes, which you are moderately likely to see.

According to World Atlas, New York's Hudson Valley is one of the 5 most rattlesnake-infested regions on the Atlantic coast. New Jersey's Pine Barrens, Everglades National Park in Florida are some of the others.

Rattlesnakes in the Hudson Valley is nothing new, they have been living here for thousands of years, but why so many in the Hudson Valley? Rattlesnakes love the rugged, rocky terrain and there are plenty of mice, squirrels and rabbits for the snakes to feed on.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reports the rattlesnake active season is April to October and they offer these tips should you encounter a rattlesnake:

  • Do not panic
  • Keep a safe distance of 6ft or more away
  • Do not kill or collect the individual.
  • Timber rattlesnakes are not aggressive unless provoked.
  • If bitten, call 911 immediately
