Fall is a great time of year to take a hike in one of the hundreds of parks in our great state. Amazing foliage and wildlife to discover! I love taking a trail to a spectacular waterfall or locate a river for my dog to play in. From time to time, if you are unlucky, you might even discover a "meth-dump".

Earlier this month New York law enforcement agencies teamed up for a methamphetamine detail in search of a "meth-dump".

This is no episode of "Breaking Bad", this is real life where people find remote outdoor locations to make methamphetamine. Often times, once they have made their batch, they leave items behind. Other times that meth-lab is still active. Either way items left behind could harm you, me and the animals.

On October 13th, the DEC reports the "meth-dump" detail located material at the Coon Hollow State Forest  in Schuyler County. Among the items found were a hydrogen chloride gas generator. Officials state that a generator such as this is commonly used as a reactionary chamber to produce Hydrogen Chloride (HCI). A State Police hazmat team safely removed the materials and the investigation is ongoing.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation joined with Forest Rangers, Investigators, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Chemung County Sherriff's Office, Elmira Heights Police Department, Horseheads Police Department, and the West Elmira Police Department.

Imagine just how hazardous these 'meth-dumps" are. Illegal meth-making materials unlawfully dumped outdoors can pose a tremendous risk to the public, wildlife, and the environment.

State officials focused on Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties and Officers also checked Seneca and Tioga counties. Be certain their work isn't done.
