Newyorkupstate.com recently posted a list of the 30 Upstate New York colleges with the highest violent crime rates.  According to newyorkupstate.com the data is compiled by the U.S. Department of Education and statistics are shared publicly.  Now, this is a list of Upstate New York schools, so one would expect the Capital Region to be on there.  In a region with multiple colleges, there’s just more of a chance to make the list.  What surprised me was that the Capital Region colleges ranked didn’t fall on the list exactly how I would’ve guessed. The violent crimes included in the statistics were things such as aggravated assault and rape.  Newyorkupstate.com has it all broken down for you by ranking, number of crimes, and worst crimes, but I’m just going to point out a few things that surprised me:

  • The top 2 were healthcare schools, #2 being Albany Medical College
  • Skidmore was way up high for a violent crime rate at #7 on the list
  • University of Albany was a lot lower than I had guessed, falling at #24
  • We really didn't have as many as I guess on the list, with about only 5 main Capital Region schools that I counted making the top 30

The only thing I really have to say about this list is let's shoot for even less and lower numbers next year.
