CVS Pharmacy To Close 5 New York Locations, Including 2 in Capital Region
CVS Pharmacy to close 2 Capital Region stores. As of this morning CVS Pharmacy has more than 9,000 store locations open and operating in the United States. Soon there will be 2 fewer locations in New York's Capital Region.
According to Newsweek, the CVS Pharmacy chain of drugstores, in an effort to restructure and streamline operations, will be closing 271 store locations nationwide. Among the closures in the northeast, 1 is in Massachusetts, 1 in Pennsylvania and 5 are in New York.

There have been so many national chain store closings announced in recent months including Dollar General, Walgreens and TD Bank, to name a few. Other brands such as Sam's Club and Walmart are going through a remodel and eliminating self-checkout lanes.
New York State has the 4th most CVS locations in America, behind California, Florida and Texas. According to Scrape Hero, there are currently 532 New York locations.
Consumer Value Stores (CVS) started in Lowell, MA in 1963. 62 years later the mega-chain is facing closures. Here are the 5 New York locations, according to Newsweek, expected to close, including 2 in Albany:
- Albany - 153 Central Avenue
- Albany - 1026 Madison Avenue
- Manhattan - 1241 Lexington Avenue
- Staten Island - 1654 Richmond Avenue
- Tonawanda - 955 Payne Avenue
In related news, in November of 2024 we reported seeing empty shelves at the Rite Aid on Central Avenue in Colonie, NY. Since that article was published it has been reported that Rite Aid will be closing all of it's New York locations.
USA Today indicates that 2025 is the year of a new 'retail reality' with more and more closures to be announced. It appears that the consumers preference to shop online is one of the biggest contributing factors.
