The mafia and New York have a rich history together. Not just New York City, but the entire state has had organized crime touch it. From Upstate to Western New York, you can trace the roots of the mob.

Obviously New York isn't the only place you'll find the mafia. New Jersey has major ties to the mob as well as Chicago. Who hasn't heard of Al Capon and the St. Valentine's Day massacre?

Up until the 1970s and 80s the Mafia was kind of untouchable until you really saw a crackdown. Even when the mafia was taking hits they were still operating, but things in 2025 are a bit different than what we saw on shows the "The Sopranos" or movies like "Goodfellas." They're a bit more strategic now and have evolved with the times.

The question that most people have is whether or not they're still active or not and where they are located. Are things a bit quieter these days for organized crime? Sure, but they have not gone anywhere. They've just gotten a little more careful and set their sights on things a little bit smaller.

Back in the day the mafia had a very heavy hand in gambling in places like Atlantic City and Las Vegas. That is also where you find most of their influence today, just not so much in the big places. They're set up shop in smaller games with regular people. People that they can take advantage of.

Just this past spring a major gambling ring was broken up and almost 40 people were arrested that were all connected to the Lucchese crime family, one of the five major families in New York. This was after a two year investigation and was being done in northern New Jersey.

In November of 2024 a gambling ring was broken up on Long Island with connection to the Bonanno crime family.

All of these particular gambling rings were small time compared to the mafia of the past, but they were still making tons of money off of it. It's just a matter of time before it catches up with them, but the hustle is still there.

It appears that the mafia is still holding strong in New York City and operating out of small stores as fronts for their illegal activities. Stores that you may go into every single day. Think of it like the pork store on Sopranos. It's where they hang out and do their business.

In 2025 the mafia, while even more in the shadows than they ever were before, is still very much alive and kicking. During Uncovering's video about where the mafia is operating out of in 2025 he talked with a  former police officer who said he believes that the mafia still has their hand in government and politics as well. Their influence is still very high and strong, and likely will be for a very long time.
