Sonic and the gang are in an all-new adventure and have undergone a couple of changes in the newly-announced Sonic Boom.

The Blue Blur and his pals have gotten a makeover in a new branch of the Sonic universe called Sonic Boom, coming to 3DS and Wii U. Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and Amy have gotten some makeovers, with Sonic and Knuckles getting the most changes. Sonic now has longer limbs, bandaged forearms and legs, and a nifty brown bandanna wrapped around his neck. Mean while, Knuckles now has a considerably larger chest and beefier arms, making him look more like a tank than ever before. This is one echidna you don't want to agitate.

According a release on the SEGA Blog, Sonic Boom's "visual identity includes character designs inspired by the abilities and unique personalities of each of the characters, while still maintaining the core identity and values of the Sonic brand." The visuals are important because we're going to be seeing a lot of this version of Sonic, given that the game will serve as a prequel to a TV series of the same name.

The game is set to feature exploration, new styles of combat and something called an "Enerbeam" tether. Neato. Both versions of the game will differ from each other, so be prepared to use the unique features of the 3DS and Wii U to explore the new worlds in Sonic Boom. The 3DS version will be developed by Sanzaru Games while the Wii U version will be handled by Big Red Button Entertainment.
