When I was 17 I thought I knew everything and I thought I could do anything, even things beyond my physical capabilities. When you are young, pushing our physical boundaries feels limitless at times. Like anything is possible.

Even as a teenager I wouldn't have attempted to climb 22 high peaks in a year, let alone in one week! What would happen if you attempted something so bold? Ankle injury? Dehydration? Seizure?

On Wednesday July 20th near Lake Placid, According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, a 17-year-old was attempting to do just that, climb 22 High Peaks in one week. Why do the NYS DEC Rangers know this? The teenager needed to be rescued by helicopter after suffering a seizure.

Rangers from the Indian Lake region reached out to Ray Brook officials regarding the young camper from Delaware. They reported that he had suffered a seizure and needed medical assistance. With the help of the Lake Colden caretaker, they reached the individual at the Herbert Brook lean-to.

Approximately 3 hours after the initial call Rangers were able to get the injured individual into the helicopter and evacuated before heading to the hospital. According to Mount Sinai Hospital, a seizure can be brought on by a number of factors but the bottom line is that a large number of your brain cells become excited at the same time.

No word on whether the climbing attributed to the seizure or not. In 2019 New York Upstate revealed that 2 men from New York City broke the record for climbing 46 High Peaks in the Adirondacks in just under seven days. No injuries reported.
