Heroic New York State Officer Saves Man and Dog from Burning Car!

Not everyone is cut out to be a New York State Department of Conservation Officer. Did you now they are a sworn police officer? Yes, these men and women protect our state's environment but on occasion they are asked to do far more. There are daily reports of Rangers rescuing injured hikers, drowning ice fishermen and so much more.

No, not everyone is cut out to be a NYS Environmental Conservation Officer but ECO Daniel Franz certainly is.

According to NYS DEC, on Thursday April 7, 2022 Officer Franz was on patrol, along Route 301 in Putnam County, when he saw what appeared to be a motor vehicle accident. As officer Franz got closer he could see that the vehicle was over the edge of an embankment and fire began to spread underneath the vehicle.

Officer Franz reacted quickly as he saw a man and a dog trapped inside! The officer crawled into the burning vehicle in an attempt to save lives. Entering through the passenger side the officer was able to get the dog out and then he pulled the driver to safety, seconds before the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames.

If this were an action movie the credits would start rolling as the man and his dog left for the hospital. In this very real-life event, Officer Franz continued with his evening of patrolling. Officer Franz has now been awarded the Department of Environmental Conservation's highest recognition, the Commissioner's Meritorious Award.
